WestJet Touches Down in Belize

The newest airline to begin flights to be Belize is WestJet. The flights will be originating from a new destination; that being Toronto, Canada twice for the week. WestJet’s first flight arrived on Saturday and aside from tourism, it is expected to boost the economy. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

For some time now, the team over at the B.T.B. has been working on establishing a direct flight from Canada to Belize. Well after discussions with two of the major carriers in that North American country, the inaugural journey of WestJet Airlines arrived at the Phillip Goldson International Airport just before midday on Saturday. As local tourism and WestJet reps alighted the flight, it solidified the newly established bridge between both countries.

“It is a moment of deep pride for the confluence of minds who gather this morning on this prestigious occasion to launch WestJet’s nonstop, biweekly service from Canada’s Toronto Pearson International Airport to Belize’s Phillip Goldson International Airport. We particularly welcome those who have risen to the challenge to join us this morning, especially Miss Linda Dawe and her management team.”

WestJet caters to forty-five thousand guests on more than six hundred daily flights to one hundred and two destinations in over twenty countries; Belize now joins the routes. According to WestJet’s Regional Manager for Caribbean Airport Operations, Linda Dawe, the launch of the new direct flight will boost economic opportunities for Belize.

“Belize is WestJet’s twenty-first destination in the Caribbean and the third in Central America; I think so far it is our best. The great thing about this service that we are offering is that Canadians can now need Toronto and be here at midday and on the beach by early afternoon. Belize is further evidence of WestJet’s commitment to connecting Canadians to our sun destinations. We are very proud to support tourism in Belize and beyond. We know that our citizens of Canada are coming here; they are staying in hotels and resorts—they are spending money, they are supporting the local restaurants and the local businesses which then provides jobs for the local people of Belize.”

According to Minister of Tourism, Manuel Heredia Junior, the expectation is that the biweekly flights will expand to daily flights, encouraging investors and catering Belizeans in the Diaspora.

“As you know the US has been our greatest market; today, with Canada, I believe it will even improve the already substantial increase in percentage of tourists arriving to our country. But it is a teamwork; everybody coming together and doing what we really need to do to be able to convince these people that Belize is a paradise, Belize is a place where everybody is welcome; particularly the hospitality of our people. Aside from that, the abundance of products that we have to offer makes Belize so unique, makes airlines—as soon as the executives are here—they are enchanted, they are overwhelmed with what we have and WestJet was no exception. When the executive arrived, we toured them around and they fell in love with Belize and that is what makes the difference.”

WELCOME!!! Your jet looks good in our sun. Hopefully we’ll see a flight out of Alberta soon. Most Canadians I run in to in Belize are from Alberta. I’m proud of Westjet making this move.
