Community Will Monitor Ship Involved in Seismic Testing

Nadia Bood

The local fishing and tourism community is keeping an eye on the ship involved in the survey. While it is not clear where it will be berthing tonight, the World Wildlife Fund’s Nadia Bood and the B.T.I.A.’s John Burgos said eyes will be spying on them to ensure they adhere to the decision by Government.

Nadia Bood, World Wildlife Fund

“Today at the meeting that we were at in San Pedro, the community really organized themselves: they created a committee which will be very watchful in terms of keeping track of where the ship is if it’s still out there or if it’s making its way back into the Port in Belize City.”

“Are they monitoring where it is at this point?”

Nadia Bood

“Yes they are, they are monitoring it .They are on the water right now.”

John Burgos, Executive Director, B.T.I.A.

“If you notice right now on the Government website, the public notice, the announcement was made that they are going to be asked to cease and desist any further testing. It doesn’t state whether they are going to be required to dock in our ports or leave Belize waters. We didn’t hear that part. But the key part is that and the good news is that they are supposed to cease and desist any actions they have been conducting from Sunday since they came.”
