NICH Contemplates Changes to Senior Leadership

Elodio Aragon Jr.

Former President of NICH, Diane Haylock is currently doing the cocktail circuit in Taipei as Belize’s new ambassador to Taiwan. Since Haylock vacated the post she held since the first Barrow administration, Greg Vernon was named interim President. But the department is going through some major changes because there are a number of others vacant posts to be filled. The government is yet to appoint Haylock’s successor and fill the post of administrator. But we can tell you that the Minister of State, Elodio Aragon Junior, has moved up Board member Yvette Torres to interim Director of Museums countrywide. Torres is a defeated mayoral candidate for Orange Walk Town and she replaces Sherilyn Jones. Aragon says they are moving to fill the slots but on Facebook, he got one piece of unsolicited advice. The former President of NICH, Yasser Musa, writes saying, “The best advice I would offer Minister Aragon would be to appoint young people to all the open posts. Older people already have access to thousands of other Government jobs. Appoint someone under thirty, best under twenty-five. The less experience the better. Appoint someone that would come with energy, and new ideas. Someone that will make mistakes for the right reasons. Then let the NICH Board operate as advisor.” Here’s Aragon:

Elodio Aragon Jr., Minister of State, EYSC

“We have put in an interim team in terms of looking over NICH until we can establish the administration, etc. What has happened, where we are, yesterday we commenced interviews for the various posts for NICH and we are looking likewise for a new president for NICH. All of these things are in process. I think we put the advertisement over the television for a number of posts that were available in NICH. At the end of the day, we want the best persons for NICH. At the end of the day, I want to see an organization that could make a difference in culture for this country. And that is why we opened up whatever positions we had there; we opened it to the public for them to apply because at the end of the day we want the best qualified persons with everything that comes with not only education, but expertise etc.  Yesterday, from what I was informed, certain interviews were started and I hope that we get a full report and by next week, we will be looking at the positions to be filled.”

“You are from Orange Walk East and you have to employ and empower people from your constituency. We know that Miss Yvette, no discredit for her, has been brought in to be I believe Director of Museums, a job she is eminently unqualified for….”

Elodio Aragon Jr.

“She on the board; but she is only there right now for the interim. In no way she will be there as the Director for Museums; I want to make that very clear.”

Reporter

“But is the Director of the Museums right now.”

Elodio Aragon Jr.

“She is only there to oversee that the transition process takes…she’s a member of the board.”

Reporter

“Sir she is the holder of a high school diploma – I don’t mean to be unkind; that’s fine…”

Elodio Aragon Jr.

“I don’t think high school man—don’t say that—it’s associate’s degree she has.”

Reporter

“….But is she qualified? That’s the question. Is she qualified?”

Elodio Aragon Jr.

“She has years of experience in dealing with the House of Culture in Orange Walk and I think right now is only a time for it to be held over until we get…and that post should be, if everything goes according to plan, we should be seeing a  new appointment before the end of this month.”
