Donations Encouraged for Burn Victims’ Fund; Hamilton Family Member Headed to Texas

Yvette Burks

It is important to note that the Shriners Hospital in Galveston, Texas is doing the surgeries and continued care for free. However, there are still costs to be paid, such as the cost of the air ambulance that took the children to Texas, monies to the mother and other charges, including a credit card charge for Burks personally. She took the opportunity to make an appeal for donations to both the Burn Victim Mercy Fund and to the Shriners’ Fund to facilitate further assistance to children. Burks also told us that another family member will be travelling to Texas to assist Melissa Hamilton with various care duties.

“And while somebody may not be able or willing to contribute directly to the Fund here in Belize, although it is desperately needed, I want to remind all Belizean-Americans and anybody who is watching this newscast that you can also contribute to the Shriners’ Hospital for Children. I cannot impress upon you enough how many millions of dollars’ worth of work our beautiful Belizean children alone have been able to access in care over the years. And so please, whenever you think about contributing to a proven charity, consider giving it to the Shriners Hospital for Children. This is an interesting one, this is hot off the press, is that Shriner’s just sent a message asking if this time around – and they are making an exception, because normally they allow only one family member – but this time around they are making an exception, because they believe that Mom could use the support, and so they have requested that we arrange for another family member who is able and willing to come up and help with the children during at least the next few weeks or months, when the children are in a more significant situation. See, the thing is that part of what they are doing is they are going to teach Mom how to manage and help the children, how to take care of the children. And because it is one mom and two very badly injured children, they just made the decision that they want a second family member to come up and help. So I just found this out; I am beginning to try to figure out how to make the arrangements, and so we have identified a sister-in-law who is going to bring her passport later today, and we hope to make arrangements for her to get out of here by early next week. And I just told you I don’t have the money to pay the rest of the bill now (Laughs), so of course I am going to be trying to figure out how to make it possible to get that second family member there, hopefully within a few days to a week.”

You can make deposits to the Burn Victim Mercy Fund at the Belize Bank account number 695-011-52111. In related news, the funeral for Aaron Hamilton, who died in the fire, took place this afternoon in Belize City. Our understanding is that there was a delay releasing the body due to an unpaid hospital bill. On Friday we will have the story of another recent burn victim who is on the road to recovery thanks to the Burn Victims Mercy Fund and Shriners Hospital of Galveston.
