Ashley Clarke murdered in Belmopan

Ashley Clarke

It was a bloody weekend, three persons were murdered; in the nation’s capital, in the west and in a southern community. A violent confrontation between a group of persons socializing at the popular La Cabaña Bar ended tragically for the Clarke family of Belmopan. One of their own, twenty-three year old Ashley Clarke was hit to the head and left to die. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

An evening of socializing among friends, a routine for twenty-three-year-old Ashley Clarke and his acquaintances, turned deadly when he reportedly got involved in a violent altercation with an unnamed person at a popular nightclub in Belmopan.  On Friday night, the Lime Street resident set off to make a purchase at a grocery store not far from where the group was gathered.  Clarke never made it back to their hangout spot with the bottle of rum he had gone to buy.

“Saturday morning, one of his friends, known as Dread, come and ask me, ih she “Miss D, Ash deh home?”  And I said no, ih she “because we send Ash from one o’clock gaan buy a quart da Knock-Knock and ih no come home.”  So immediately I get pan di phone and I staat to call my son and I call my phone and he never answered.  But then I couldn’t locate his friend Edmond, because Edmond and him are close, they are like brothers.  So I said, nothing noh wrong with Ash because ih deh wid Edmond.  I called everybody who I could have called to see if they could have called Ash, nobody [was able to locate him].”

Little did the unsuspecting parent know that her son had been brutally attacked following a fistfight at La Cabana.  Upon paying for the bottle of liquor, Ashley is said to have asked another of his friends to accompany him to the establishment.  Once there, things would take a turn for the worst.

“I called Edmond.  I said Edmond, ah seh, “Weh Ash?  You deh wid Ash?”  Ih seh, “No Miss D”  Ih she Ash noh deh deh.  Dah then I know something was wrong with Ash.  So I called my husband and said go and check for Ashley, check about, check the last person whom he was with, check the last person, they call him OV.  Find OV, find OV, but they couldn’t find OV so they left my phone number with some one of OV’s relatives.  Before long OV appeared at my work spot Buca’s and I said, “OV weh Ash?  We happen to Ash?”  And then he said, “Miss D, I ket Ashley gaan buy wah quart da Knock-Knock and Ash tell me ih wahn go da Cabana.  And he hyah when Ash punch somebody and Ash run outta Cabana and Ash sehe, “Bwai OV, start di cycle” ih seh, “Ah just punch somebody eena dehn mouth” and Ash run.  And I said, where did Ash run?  Where did Ash run?  And he said pan di walkway.”

That was presumably here, a long concrete footpath which leads to a roundabout not far from Sweet Dreams Hotel.  It is safe to say that Clarke was pursued by his attacker in the vicinity of the bed and breakfast.  Officer Commanding Belmopan Police Formation, Superintendent Howell Gillett via telephone:

On the Phone: Supt. Howell Gillett

Supt. Howell Gillett, O.C., Belmopan Police

“We believe a number of young people were socializing at the nearby nightclub and during that period, some of the young persons, including the now deceased Mr. Clarke, might have gotten into a fight and he ran away from the scene and he was followed by a number of young men whom we believed inflicted the wounds that caused his death.”

Clarke’s mother continues with an account provided to her by the person she knows as OV.

“Ih sehe but Miss D, when I mi di come home early morning he saw blood on the walk spot.  So I told my husband go by the roundabout and check for my son.  And there his body was, done decomposed, face down, you know.”

Isani Cayetano“When was this discovery made?”

Darlene Clarke

“It was Saturday afternoon sometime after twelve.”

By then, Clarke’s body had already began to decompose, prompting an onsite post mortem examination.  The result of the coroner’s inquest reveals that he had been struck in the back of the head with a blunt object.

Supt. Howell Gillett

“Well so far we have two persons in custody and we are looking for a third person whom we believe could assist us in this investigation.”

Darlene Clarke is assured that police in the Garden City will do everything to provide closure in her son’s death.

Darlene Clarke

“This morning I visited the police station and all they are saying is that they have leads, they have people in custody and they have footage from La Cabana but that’s all I’m getting from them so far, that they won‘t give up, they will get to the bottom of it.”
