Minister’s son got big money for prime land at Haulover

Among the demands of good governance that the B.N.T.U. is agitating for involves the fight against corruption in government. Back in October 2013, Prime Minister Dean Barrow publicly admitted that the Ministry of Lands is a hotbed of corruption in light of the sordid and crooked land deals being cut at the department. This is what he said to Belizeans living in Los Angeles.

Dean Barrow, Prime Minister

“I believe that the lands department unfortunately is another hotbed of corruption. The administration has tried to do something about the officers who through dishonesty rather than incompetence—perhaps in some instances, it is a combination of both.”

Well, a new minister has been installed since then, the once powerful deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega was succeeded by the PM’s go-to- guy, Godwin Hulse and more recently by Minister Vanessa Retreage. Now, News Five has obtained copies of documents that show the paper trial of a particular land deal that ultimately ended at the door of the son of Minister Vega. The documents show that a prime strip of land near the Haulover Bridge, at Mile Five between the Caribbean Sea and the Philip Goldson Highway, was first sold for a pittance to one Hilmar Alamilla, Vega’s right hand man. The size of that specific parcel of land was over one acre and it went for a measly two thousand five hundred dollars after the actual price was discounted at the request of the sitting minister. This, even after lands personnel minuted the land files saying that it was privately owned and not government land. Alamilla would eventually sell it off to Andre Vega, the minister’s son. That happened on December thirtieth, 2013, within months that Alamilla first obtained the land. The price: fifteen thousand dollars for sea front property. But since it was private land, the GOB compensated Andre Vega in September 2015, in the sum of a whopping four hundred thousand dollars, at least   two thousand five hundred percent more than the price paid.  It is well known that government has spent millions in compensation on this type of land deals. And if you gasp, don’t hold your breath, because the strip of land was actually split in two. The other person who was sold the remaining portion of the land is also highly connected … And we will have those details and the compensation package in our newscast on Wednesday.

If you all only knew the scope of corruption in this gov is just astonishing even for this corrupt pm and gov .and yet this pm puts the teachers down because they want a raise well there is no money left the ministers have all stole the money they need to be put in jail every single one of them starting with judas barrow.

  2. Al says:

Exactly why we need to be fully behind the teachers. They are the only one with balls to go against the government. The chamber and other bodies need to join and show that its the people who has the power, and not the government and its minions. One day of strike from the business sector will not do it. See what Hulse said? It won’t affect him. He is rich. If the business sector shuts down for one day, it won’t be a nuisance to him. But he is not the only corrupted one. Shutting down businesses for a week will start affecting some of the others.

Not surprising at all! I have been trying for years to get my land certificate but have been told that it was on hold because a certain greedy minister had a special interest on my sea front property!!

And I can’t even get the papers for my one house lot that I now live on for the last thirteen years. I get a million and one excuses from the lands department. The only excuse left was to tell me their dog eat my paper works. Support the reasons behind the strike 100%. If someone with big cohones doesn’t step up and challenge the governance of our country small man won’t ever get ahead. I don’t give a crap about RED or BLUE I care about my future and that of my children.
