Chamber to go to Senate meeting under protest

The senate committee has been established but its composition is of concern and so are the terms of reference. One particular vexing issue is that the committee would require authorization to interview witnesses and the special audit has identified thirteen former and sitting ministers linked to the immigration mess. The feeling is that there will be a privileged set who will not be accessible to answer questions and therefore the investigation would not be thorough and independent.  We can confirm tonight that the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry will participate in the meeting but there are provisos. First, the B.C.C.I. will lodge a protest to be reflected in the records, that it does not support the terms of reference. Second, the B.C.C.I. will formally inform that it will come back to the senate to present a motion to counter the current composition of the Committee.  The B.C.C.I. has also written to the Chair requesting a postponement of Wednesday’s meeting, but that request was denied. The organization will be holding a special meeting this Wednesday for its membership to ratify a one day closure of businesses. A poll of its members, gave overwhelming support to this measure.
