Youth drowns in creek in Belmopan

A nineteen-year-old student lost his life on Sunday when he drowned in an area of Belmopan known as Rivera.  Gian Bethran, along with several of his friends, went swimming that afternoon.  Bethran dove into the river and never resurfaced.  Despite all efforts to rescue the teenager, those attempts provide futile.  Villagers, as well as Belmopan police and divers from the Belize National Coast Guard were subsequently called in to assist in retrieving the body.

“This occurred sometime after two p.m. on Sunday. October ninth, the deceased who we now identify as Gian Jaheed Bethran, he’s a nineteen-year-old student of Belmopan.  He and other friends went to swim at the Rivera area of Belmopan and during the during the process he went under water and did not resurface.  Friends whom he was along with, they tried to rescue him but that attempt failed.  Police, and we called in some villagers and also the Belize National Coast Guard and we were unable to find him on the same day which was the Sunday until early the next morning, the Monday, his body was retrieved

from the water.”
