Brother to be Charged with Brother’s Murder in Orange Walk

Ruben Cain

A man was killed by his brother in Orange Walk on Wednesday evening. Forty-one year old Ruben Cain, a labourer of Flamboyant Street, was stabbed in the chest by his brother during an altercation at home.  Because it is a case of fratricide, the family declined a comment earlier today. Police have since arrested Cain’s brother and are expecting to charge him with murder. Reports are that the suspect suffers from a mental illness, but Police would not confirm that. Here’s what Deputy O.C. of Orange Walk Police had to say on the latest homicide in that town:

Insp. Jose Mendez, Deputy O.C, Orange Walk Police

“Sometime around 4:45 yesterday’s date, Police responded to a fight in progress at Flamboyant Street. Upon arrival, they found a Hispanic male person, later identified as forty one year old Ruben Cain of said address, with what appeared to be stab wounds to the chest. And with Police assistance, Mr. Cain was rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Reporter

“We are told he was stabbed by a family member?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“That is what we get to understand.”

Jose Mendez

Reporter

“Is the family member in custody?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“Yes. Police later apprehended the family member and he is in custody at the moment.”

Reporter

“Can you tell us what transpired- up to the point where he was stabbed?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“Okay. Our investigation revealed that there was a misunderstanding, which led to a fight which resulted in Mister Cain’s injuries.”

Andrea Polanco

“Was alcohol involved? Was one the guys were drinking?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“We do not have that information at this time.”

Reporter

“We were told that the family member who inflicted the wound is mentally challenged. Can you confirm?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“No. We haven’t confirmed it as yet because the investigation is still ongoing.”

Reporter

“Is the person in custody cooperating with the Police?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“Yes, he is.”

Reporter

“Was the incident witnessed by other family members?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“That is what the Police is looking after as we speak.”

Andrea Polanco

“Sir, what you can tell us about Mister Cain himself. Is he known to the police? Has he been involved in perhaps altercations before?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“No. Up to time now we don’t have any records to reflect such.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, this happened inside the residence or outside in the yard?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“Investigation revealed that it was outside the residence.”

Andrea Polanco

“Sir, when I passed by the house earlier, the mothers of the two boys involved said that they called the police when the fight started and they never showed up. The only showed up when he was dead. Can you confirm if the family member reached out to police before the boy was stabbed?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“The information came in at exactly around 3:40 and the incident was reportedly like five minutes before and the Police was there.Information was received that the man was still alive and hence the reason the police assisted and rushed Mister Cain to the hospital. Police are working on the matter so hopefully either late this evening or early tomorrow morning; he will be formally arrested and charged and arraigned.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, you can’t provide us with a name?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“At this point in time, no.”
