Teenager’s Charges Dismissed; He Escaped Alleged Police Brutality

Teenager Leon Martinez is free of any criminal charges tonight. Police say he tried to escape from the Ladyville Police Station while under detention for an alleged burglary and common assault. Martinez was not charged with either crime and claims that on September thirtieth, when he tried to leave the station, three police officers entered his cell and began to beat him up. He was struck with the butt of a firearm and tasered. His face was left badly swollen and it took until today for the injuries to recede so that he could look presentable in court. According to Martinez, he was first detained with three other men for burglary but they were released. Additionally according to police, Martinez’ accuser on the common assault charge never made an official report and so no charges could be laid. In court, Martinez says he tried to escape because that he did not want to end up like his friend, Otto Palma, who was found hanging in a cell at the station while under detention for rape. With that the Magistrate cautioned Martinez and dismissed the charge.
