Between the Image Factory, House of Culture, Museum of Belize, and the Mexican Institute, it seems that not a week goes by without a new art exhibition. Tonight we’ll preview the latest from across the northern border.

Mexican artist Gerardo Espejo started painting at the age of fifteen. Twenty-five years later he’s getting ready to put off his first international show in Belize.

“I admit I am kind of nervous, but happy. I arrived here in Belize two days ago, but I began working and mounting pieces yesterday.”

Espejo, who is a self-taught painter, says it took him a number of years before he learned to perfect the art. But with a number of recognitions and honourable mentions under his belt, he is proud of what he has accomplished.

“What impresses me when I was a little kid or when I was young and I went through the books that were in my house and I saw these paintings I was impressed by how a person will be able to do such a thing that looks like a photograph. And that for me was incredible and I tried to get to that point.”

The exhibition, dubbed Dialogo Meridiano, opens tonight at the Mexican Institute.

The exhibition also includes paintings by another Mexican artist, Emilio Salazar.
