P.U.P. Still Insists on Balanced Senate Special Select Committee

A Senate Select Committee was established last Friday; it includes only one member from the People’s United Party. Today, the Opposition called for a reconstitution of the Committee and advanced it recommendations. The P.U.P. arduously objected to a motion presented by the Church Senator which gives the G.O.B. the upper hand.  The lead Opposition senator, Eamon Courtenay, also asked that Senator Godwin Hulse recuse himself on the grounds that he is named in the report, but furthermore that his own portfolio on immigration will be investigated by the Committee. That motion is yet to be dealt with. With the balance tipping against the Opposition, the P.U.P. is calling for an independent and impartial Committee to investigate the illegalities contained in the Auditor General’s Special Audit for the period of 2011-2013. The P.U.P. asserts that the motion presented by Senator Ashley Rocke did not come from the Churches, but in fact from the government. The P.U.P. calls for an urgent meeting of the Senate to reconstitute the Committee to comprise one Senator from those appointed by the Prime Minister, one from those appointed by the Leader of the Opposition and one from each of the social partners. The party also wants the independent and impartial Committee to be able to call any person as a witness with relevant information. The third proposal involves money to be made available for the conduct of a full and proper inquiry. And the Committee must be allowed to hire independent experts including attorneys and accountants. The P.U.P. repeats its strong condemnation of Senator Hulse for his participation in Friday’s proceedings due to the obvious conflict of interest. It concludes by saying that Hulse voted in favour of the U.D.P./Church Motion, and participated in crafting its ineffective terms of reference of the Committee thereby tainting it with bias and rendering it unlawful. The release says Senator Hulse cannot be judge, jury and executioner in his own cause.

I still can not believe why Mr. Hulse, he who talked a lot against corruption years ago, can not see that this is a conflict of interest. Years ago I thought that this guy was intelligent as how he used to speak, but now I can see that people are not what they appear to be.
