Senator Rocke Says Churches Were Converted to Support Government View

Was the motion presented by Senator Rocke today originally crafted in the office of the Prime Minister and presented as the Church’s motion. More importantly, Senator Rocke said during the meeting that there were consultations between the Churches and the other social partners – meaning the trade unions and civil society and the business community – but their Senators explicitly said during this morning’s meeting that they were not consulted or told of this. We will show you their reactions later on. So what exactly led to the motion? After trying to direct reporters to the head of the Belize Council of Churches and Association of Evangelical Churches, then claiming that he was simply doing his job, the harried Senator changed his stance and conceded a few insights, including that the Church had been converted to the Government’s point of view.

Reporter

“So who helped you…what legal advisors helped the church put together the motion that was presented today?”

Ashley Rocke, Senator for Churches

“I’m not privy to that information.”

Reporter

“But this is supposed to be your motion sir…Wouldn’t you be able to know?”

Ashley Rocke

“This is the church’s motion, not my motion.”

Reporter

“At the same time, you should therefore be knowledgeable f who helped to prepare that.”

Ashley Rocke

“Not necessarily.”

Reporter

“Were you consulted in the making of that motion? Were you consulted with the legal advisors or Mister Papouloute about forming this proposal, this motion?”

Ashley Rocke

“My responsibility was simply to come here to do what they put together.”

Reporter

“Sir but as senator, you would think that you would be instrumental, be a part of those meetings, if you had to come here and defend such a motion.”

Ashley Rocke

“Well the motion was easily defended, I believe.”

Reporter

“Did you simply just come to read a paper that you were given to read?”

Ashley Rocke

“No, I knew what was in there. And the whole issue of the balance of persons was the real issue that this motion was written on, the real basis that this motion was written on. The balance of persons or group…because there is three Opposition, one came from there—because there is six government, two came from there and because there are so much social partners engaged in the three social partners, we felt that three was a good balance from the social partners. So the compilation of one, two and three we feel was very much in place.”

Reporter

“The other social partners who came here today representing their membership have said that there was in fact no consultation with them, when in your motion, you said there had been.”

Ashley Rocke

“They said that and you all don’t know the facts, but we know the facts.”

Reporter

“So share those sir.”

Ashley Rocke

“I’m not going share those. No, no, no. I’m not going to do that.”

Now that the Committee has been constituted and adopted, we understand that the members will be named, following which they will be convened by Senate President Lee Mark Chang to elect a Chair, after which they will begin meeting on their own to hash out details of the work of the Committee. A timeline for that has not been set. Meanwhile, News Five has confirmed that the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church were not consulted and would not have supported the composition proposed by Senator Rocke.
