What Can We Expect During Senate Meeting?

Richard “Dickie” Bradley

As we said, the special meeting of the senate is expected to debate the two fresh motions expected with regard to this important national issue. But will they cancel each other out or will peace and harmony prevail? Today, News Five asked former Senator Richard “Dickie” Bradley for a preview of what could happen in Belmopan on Friday.

Richard “Dickie” Bradley, Attorney

“What would have to happen is that there would have to be a suspension of the standing orders, which is the rule of how the Senate conducts its business. You will have to have that suspended because the rules don’t require that you could pappy-show the senate; every time yo got wah meeting, yo di call for a motion on the same matter. The president would have to agree; they would have to get leave. And then once you move the rules, and say you can’t come back after a certain period—you suspend that—then they can introduce the motion. They can introduce any amount of motions. And so of course you have to remember that the government has the majority in the senate and so chances are there are going to be lobbying, like what they did in the last occasion, to try and get someone from the Chamber of Commerce and someone from the Churches to agree with them because that is how this politics is played.  So tomorrow chances are that there will emerge a motion approved by the senate in relation to investigating the immigration scandal. Now the senate is also authorized—not the Prime Minister, not the Cabinet—it is the senate who is also to decide on the composition; meaning how many members out of the senate will sit on that inquiry that investigation. And where they will be selected from.”
