Godwin Hulse concedes wrongdoing in Audit Reports and gives support to Auditor General

As for the composition of the assigned working group, the fact that government will have three seats on the Senate Select Committee has raised concerns in other corners, particularly from the Opposition.  They contend that government’s majority membership can and will influence the outcome of the inquiry.  Senator Hulse says that notion is absurd.

Godwin Hulse, Minister of Immigration

“There are a lot of things that were done that were wrong, that were done that were illegal, lots of things.  It highlights a parallel system which we knew, I found that out when we had the Penner situation.  I found that out and that was one of the reasons why we moved swiftly to put in our system some changes to try to stem that.  I will not guarantee the public that we have stemmed it but that is going forward and then we waited for the audit report to look backward in detail so that we can do something about those persons who did wrong, cancel those passports that were wrongly issued, cancel those nationalities and try to fix that.”

“Sir, yesterday the Opposition called on the government to stop with its personal attacks against the Auditor General Ms. Bradley.  Do you feel that in this situation, in your opinion that she did anything wrong in presenting these facts?”

“Absolutely not.  She didn’t do anything wrong and I am not going to stand here, like I said on the show, and malign or criticize that esteemed office.  The Auditor General is an officer of the National Assembly, so I do not in any way criticize, malign, talk about the messenger.  I look at the message and as I said in the interview today there are some inaccuracies in the message.  Some of those inaccuracies have spurned public outcry and we do have a responsibility to deal with those.”
