Barrow insists Government’s majority must be respected

Dean Barrow

The composition of the parliamentary committee to investigate the Immigration Department remains a contentious matter.  The Prime Minister went on record earlier today to state that personally he has no problem with a Joint Select or for that matter, a Senate Select Committee.  What he refuses to cede is government’s majority on the task force, since according to the standing orders, any such committee should reflect the makeup of the ruling party as the majority.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“We certainly will want to see what position the Chamber finally takes.  We have already heard Mayor Bradley. Cabinet will discuss this matter again and it may well be that we say, fine let it in fact go the way of the Senate Committee.  I don’t want to preempt what my colleagues will say on Tuesday.  I will tell you one thing, if, as you say they will, the Opposition attempts to reintroduce the motion, I am hoping that the president will allow them to.  We are not, I would think, again without getting ahead of the Cabinet, I don’t think we will ever agree to the composition that the People’s United Party is suggesting.  My God man, you look at the standing orders, every standing order that talks about a committee of either chamber says that the balance on the committee should reflect the composition of the particular chamber.  We have in the House the majority, we have, talking about the political parties, in the Senate the majority.  How dare they say that the committee must be composed of three social partners, which we have no problem with, one PUP and one UDP.  We won an election you know!  We won an election.  For myself now, because Cabinet has not yet been recessed of the matter, but I don’t have no problem with the, if we go the route of a Senate Committee, I have no problem with that committee being chaired by a social partner.  I have no problem frankly if the combination of social on the committee.”
