Is Joint Select Committee legal?

Eamon Courtenay

Senator Eamon Courtenay explained that for a defeated motion to be re-introduced in the Senate they would have to approach the president and ask for a suspension of the rules.  Once successful, the proposal can be brought forward a second time and vote would be taken.  They intend to do so at a Special Sitting of the Senate.  We also asked Senator Courtenay if a legal challenge can be mounted to block a Joint Select Committee since it is not constitutionally recognized.

Eamon Courtenay, P.U.P. Senator

“Well first of all the ship has not yet sailed, the senate is still there and the senate is entitled to 1, vote on anything that is put before it. If we were to bring back a motion, the senate has the ability to suspend its roots if there is any rule that will have it be reconsidered at this time. So, the ship hasn’t sailed, the ship is very much in port and I can tell you that is our specific intention to call on the president of the senate to call a senate meeting at the earliest convenient date in order for this very important matter to be reconsidered. And the reason for that is twofold, firstly, it is the constitution of Belize that has stated that the responsibility for carrying out this type of investigation and query rest with the senate and no other body. And so this proposal by the government to have a joint committee is not provided for in the constitution and as far as we are concerned will contravene the very constitutional provision that this current government proposed and passed. So, we believe that the proper way to go is to go by following the constitution. Secondly, it seems to us that the public and the important social partners are now coming to the view that the proper way to go is to go by way of a senate investigation. And we believe that id the wider community wants a senate investigation then the president of the senate should call a senate meeting and reconsider this matter and take the proper decision in the interest of the country.”

  1. Joe Blank says:

What’s the point?? Politicians and their Civil Society co-conspirators don’t give 2 hoots about Morality and Ethics. Once they trample on every Law of Morality and Decency, the Legal Line is still 1 mile down the road. That is what they call Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. Embarrassment, shame and humiliation will not get you jailed. Anyone will gladly take the shame before the bars. That is why lawyers get very rich shuffling paper while the rest of us have to work hard for a living. They entrench themselves in the Legislative System so they can create loopholes to enrich themselves. They value their Labor skyscrapers above what it is worth while we get monkey money for ours. And after they screw us, to add insult to injury, we hand them a microphone to glorify themselves. Smh!
