Elected officials cannot court corruption, Mayor insists

Darrell Bradley

Bradley took a strong position in respect of corruption. The mayor believes that elected official have to stand against corruption.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“I was very, very clear that I think that if there is any march supporting anti-corruption in a very non-political way that is something I think every elected official should attend. This should not be an issue that is partisan; it should not be an issue that is divisive. I think every single of our population including every member of all elected office of this land should be vocal about supporting anti-corruption; that’s something that I think affects every aspect of our national life. We ought not to spend so much of our national energy dealing with something like corruption. I mean that’s actually something….there are so many more important things that affect the development of our nation that we need to be focusing on that we need to be unified around and rallying around than this. And so when they asked me my position, I was quite candid that we need a strong action in relation to ensuring that at all levels of government, both national and municipal—because we have had problems at the city council in the past—we need to do what is in our power to ensure that we are carrying out the people’s business. And to the extent where there are strong campaigns that have strategy ends which are non-political in the sense of party political—that really will get at the root causes of stomping out corruption in public life—that’s something that I must as an elected official support. The important point is that we want a public administration section that is impregnable to corruption. I think it is difficult because I think in Belize over the many years that I’ve lived here, there’s been a growing culture of that. If you want anything done and I am speaking at all levels, including the administrative level. There are problems that we have in the lands department, there are problems that we have in the immigration department. I am a lawyer I feel that. My clients come to me sometimes and they say to me, “Bwai Darrell, you di tell we this thing wah take six weeks; I could get it ina two days.” Those things are troubling to me as an agent for change within our society.”
