Man shot in troubled area of Southside Belize City

There were two shootings over the past twenty-four hours. The first took place sometime around six o’clock on Thursday evening on south side Belize City. Thirty-seven year old Jason Longsworth was at a house on McKay Boulevard talking with his common-law-wife at their front door when they were approached by two men on separate bicycles. The men opened fire in the couple’s direction and Longsworth was hit to the lower back and the right leg.  Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told News Five today that the investigation shows that the shooting is not linked to the murder of Nicasio Zuniga, which occurred two days ago in the general area.

“He was transported to the K.H.M.H. where he is currently in a stable condition.”

“Sir this area is actually where the last murder took place. Could you talk to us if this is a retaliation for what happened to Mister Nicasio Zuniga?”

ACP Chester Williams

“No it is no retaliation. We are still trying to find out what happened. The person who is the victim at this time is from Hattieville; we understand that he has a girlfriend who lives in that area. But there is no evidence at this time to suggest that it has anything to do with the shooting death of Mister Zuniga.”

Duane Moody

“I know that you guys have always been in that area but have boosted patrols in that area and have done interventions in there following the murder of Mister Nicasio. Could you talk to us about detecting that something was going to happen?”

ACP Chester Williams

“No, like I said the person is not even from the area; he is from Hattieville and he is not a part of what we do. It is the first time I am hearing from him. Yes we have stepped up our patrols, but what I’ll be reviewing the patrols in that area and see how I can put additional resources; it will be extremely difficult, but it’s the area that is plaguing us at this time and we have to make adjustments and those adjustments will be made today.”

The other shooting took place on the north side of Belize City. Just after ten, thirty-five year old Marvin Ottley was on Lizarraga Avenue when he was lured outside his house. As he exited, two men were inside his yard; one pulled out a firearm and he was shot to the left hand. Police investigations continue.
