A Murder on Monday Night in Belize City

Nicasio Zuniga

A twenty-two year old was executed on Monday evening in the unending cycle of violence in the city. Nicasio Zuniga was ambushed by a duo on bicycles on Complex Drive not far from his house on Jones Street in the Saint Martin’s area. One of the gunmen pulled out a firearm and delivered the fatal shot at Zuniga hitting him on the head; he died instantly. Police believe the murder is the work of gangs operating in the dangerous neighborhood. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Just around the start of news time on Monday night, the echoes of a gunshot and an ambulance siren reverberated in the Saint Martin De Porres area of south side Belize City; another Belize City youth had been executed.  On Complex Drive, less than a block from the Charles Bartlett Hyde Building on Mahogany Street, the body of twenty-two-year-old Nicasio Zuniga was discovered face up on the street; he had been shot once to the head, reportedly by two men who rode on separate bicycles.

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“Nicasio Zuniga was associating in the vicinity of Complex Road in the St. Martin’s De Porres area when he was accosted by two male persons on separate bicycles, one of whom was armed with a firearm and fired one shot at him, hitting him in the head and subsequently resulted in his death. We are currently looking for those two individuals and our investigation continues.”

Zuniga was killed a stone’s throw from where he lived on Jones Street, smack in the middle of gang territory. ACP Chester Williams says that although investigation is in its infancy stage, the murder appears to be gang-related, as a result of rivaling gangs in the area.

ACP Chester Williams

“I will say that as you rightly have said that the Complex area is very vulnerable in the sense that we do have two rival gangs in that area and every so often there is some incident between the two gangs. And it is an area that is difficult to police, but we try our utmost best to see how we can police and contain the area. And I think that when you compare the situation there now to how it used to be, I still believe that we are doing good in terms of how we police the area.”

“Sir was Mister Zuniga in an area that he frequents? If he from that area?”

ACP Chester Williams

“Yes he does frequent that area; it is the area not too far from where he lives because he lived on Jones Street.”

Intervention efforts are currently underway in the area to avert any retaliation.

ACP Chester Williams

“From our investigation, it appears to be gang-related and we are currently in the area to see how best we can mitigate any further retaliation where that particular incident is concerned. We have changed our strategies in terms of how we deploy in the area and we continue to see how we can make changes here and there for us to be able to police the area as best as we can without neglecting the other parts of south side Belize City. As you would know that every area on south side Belize City do have a potential for gang flare up so we have to be alert where these types of incidents are concerned.”

I’m sick of you and your intervention you jack. Belize hasn’t awakened as yet. It seems as if all you clamour is the limelight Chester, just like your mayor and prime minister,
