Guatemala Wants Inter-American Court on Human Rights to Intervene

Carlos Raul Morales

Guatemala was the first to call for an O.A.S. led investigation and had agreed to the appointment of the experts. But now the tables have turned since the report exonerates the B.D.F. and in fact notes that there was interference with the evidence on the part of the Guatemalans. In the interview this morning, the Foreign Minister reiterated that the case of the minor will be taken to the Inter-American Human Rights Court and Guatemala will be embarking on a full blown campaign on the rights of the child.

Carlos Raul Morales, Foreign Minister, Guatemala [Translated]

“They do not have the proper training and above all they don’t have the psychological training that the firing of a weapon should be the last option. You should fire a weapon when you don’t have any other choice. They were many options prior to that, such as subduing the farmers and in this case, the two children and their father. The military and the members of the N.G.O. that acts like a paramilitary could have done that if the threat was so great. Unfortunately, it has happened and that has been their behavior and Guatemala is having no more of that. And we will take this case to the Inter-American Human Rights Court; they will hear this case and we have also contacted other human rights commissions of the world because we cannot allow this to continue happening to us. If we do not stop this type of behavior, they will continue killing our villagers in the adjacency zone; if we do not put a stop to this, they will continue killing our people. Apart from the  existing dispute, which is a separate matter, the least that we ask is respect for one another.”

Guatemala knows nothing about respect. Belize it is long overdue that we take the bull by the horns.

Guatemala is trying to hide their embarrassment and will continue putting their hoof in their mouth. If they would stop killing off their people and provide means for them to make a living, their people would stop encroaching over our borders. Our government doesn’t provide for us to make a living either, but you don’t see us building communities on their side of the border.

if he cares so much for his people why doesn’t he make the plea for them to stay in guatemala? i’m so sick of the goverments trying to pit us against each other.
