P.U.P. Questions Defense of Nationality Grant for Peter Dahlstrom

The People’s United Party senators called a press conference at Independence Hall in Belize City this afternoon and they went straight to the point.  According to Senator Michel Chebat, there has been a concerted effort by the Prime Minister and the Immigration Minister, Senator Godwin Hulse to cover up the fraudulent activities at the Immigration and Nationality Department. First, the P.U.P. zoned in on the qualification to acquire nationality through marriage; specifically as it relates to the case of Peter William Dahlstrom, who is the brother-in-law of the Prime Minister’s wife, Kim Simplis Barrow. He was granted nationality as noted in the Special Audit on immigration for the period 2011-2013 which is bringing to light rampant irregularities at the Department. The P.U.P. says Dahlstrom did not meet the requirements of the Nationality Act.

Michel Chebat,

Michel Chebat, P.U.P. Senator

“The applicant must submit an application to the Minister of Immigration; the applicant must be of full age and sound mind; the applicant is and intends to continue to be ordinarily resident in Belize on the date of the application. The applicant has been resident in Belize throughout a period of one year, immediately preceding the date of the application and the applicant is the spouse or the widow or the widower of a citizen of Belize. The long and short of the foregoing is that the application can only be submitted after the applicant has in fact completed one full year of residency in Belize after marriage and intends to continue residing in Belize. In this case, Minister Godwin Hulse on the recommendation of the Prime Minister Dean Barrow and his wife Kim Simplis Barrow approved the application for Belizean nationality of Peter William Dahlstrom, a native of Sweden, granting him and signing a Belize nationality certificate for the Prime Minister’s brother-in-law even though he did not meet the legal qualifications as required by the Nationality Act. Peter William Dahlstrom is married to Kim Simplis Barrow’s sister; Mister Dahlstrom is the Prime Minister’s brother-in-law, Mister Dahlstrom lives in London, UK and has never resided in Belize for a period of one year.”
