U.D.P. On Record Calling for Senate Inquiry in S.S.B. Scandal

Michel Chebat

One other issue that is a priority for the P.U.P. is their call for a senate select investigation. That motion was presented in the senate, but defeated seven to five. The Opposition senators recalled that when the U.D.P. was in Opposition twelve years ago, they too had proposed and was granted a Senate Select Investigation into the Social Security Board scandal in 2004. The senators maintain that according to the constitution, the senate is the only body empowered to conduct investigations into these types of illegal activities. As such, they reject a bicameral investigation as proposed by PM Barrow.

Michel Chebat, P.U.P. Senator

“Obviously they are going to say it doesn’t because what you see here is a cover up. The body that is mandated by the constitution to investigate these sort of matters is the senate; it is the senate. And what we see here is an attempt to kick this down the road and to cover it up because there is no way that we can get an independent investigation being headed by six ministers. I mean, you have thirteen ministers named in this report; the fourteenth being Minister Godwin Hulse himself.  So, as far as we are concerned, the body that has the authority under the constitution is the senate. And it is logical; the framers of the constitution were wise people and they recognized that the ministers can’t investigate themselves and that is why they charged the senate to conduct this investigation.”

Valerie Woods, P.U.P. Senator

“What we are asking for as senators appointed by the Opposition is no different than what was asked for by the then Leader of the Opposition, Honorable Dean Barrow when it was the matter of the Social Security Board scandal. In fact, several of your news stations have it on record where he came out saying and as well as some of the other members of the opposition party where they picketed or protested the Social Security Board offices back in 2004. They were very clear that no government majority committee can fairly and unbaisedly, if I can use such a term, investigate themselves on such a scandal. Then it was social security; today, it is about our nationality. The rationale does not change just because it is now Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Minister Godwin Hulse that is at the helm of this scandal.”
