B.D.F. Commander Confirms Guatemalan Settlement in Chiquibul is No More

Today, Brigadier General David Jones, Commander of the Belize Defence Force, issued an update to last night’s report about a group of soldiers who went to verify that Guatemalan citizens had obeyed an order to depart Belizean territory where they had established a settlement and walked into gunfire which they returned. The shooting took place approximately two hundred and fifty-nine meters east of the border at about eleven-thirty on Wednesday morning. The B.D.F. patrol was heading to Retero Camp when they came under fire by what the B.D.F. says are unidentified persons. Fortunately no one was injured, but the O.A.S. Office in the Adjacency Zone has been called to investigate the incident.

“The patrol got down and they returned fire in the direction where the fire came and they waited because they were only three shots fired at them. After a while they went forward to check that no one was hurt or injured, as what occurred with the boy the previous time – when they had fired back at the direction, they found the boy – so they did the same thing, to go and look forward in case anyone was hurt. They didn’t find anyone hurt or injured, so they returned back to base. So they did not see who fired at them, but they returned back to base. And we sent back a patrol in today, actually, to verify if the people had indeed left, because we had heard that they had abided by the O.T.L., but we could not verify if they had left because they came under fire. So we went back today, and about eleven o’clock today the patrol reached the area, where we had initially about six families living there, and when we got there the place was abandoned, and all the dwellings were taken down, and removed from the area.”

Guatemalan authorities have been informed but according to General Jones, because the patrol did not see who fired at them, they cannot say whether it was civilians or soldiers who did the shooting. Jones says it comes with the job and soldiers expect that they will come under fire while on the job from disgruntled persons whose lives have been affected by the B.D.F.’s operations.

  1. Manuel Pinto says:
