Red Cross Continues to Distribute to Affected Families

According to Ambassador Quesnel, the amount was determined following assessments from the Government and the Belize Red Cross. The Red Cross has helped approximately five hundred families across the Belize District and Director General Lily Bowman says that the financial assistance forms part of the Belize Disaster Risk Emergency Fund. The money will be disbursed through the local cash transfer program.

“It means a lot for us because it will reach a lot more of our people who are in need. But it means even more from the Mexican embassy because their country was so affected. They had fifty deaths, they also felt the wrath of Hurricane Earl, but they still had the time to reach a helping hand out to Belize. So it is really a lot meaningful to us.”

“You’ve made several donations—as they come in, you distribute and you hand out. Where is it that you need the assistance for this particular donation?”

“Well this particular donation is in the cash transfer program and as we carry out our assessments and we identify those families that have been most affected, we are giving them the cash support.”

“We want to be part of this process and to be present and more than nothing to show the willingness of the Mexican government and people from Chetumal. Quintana Roo and the private sector that we want to strengthen the relationship with Belize and that we are present with the people and we are friends and we will do whatever we can to strengthen the relationship.”
