Carlos Moreno Calls for Ventilation of Decision in Local Forum

Carlos Moreno

According to Ambassador Moreno, the decision sets a precedent that is being observed by Caribbean and Latin America.  The legal system and the people of Belize, Moreno says, should be justifiably proud of this landmark decision. But is this a widely held international view being forced on the local population by the U.S. and the U.K. without permission or acceptance? In his response, Moreno told the media that social change like this moves slowly and takes generations and the decision is part of the natural course of evolution.

Carlos Moreno, U.S. Ambassador to Belize

“I don’t know how many countries in the world—it is probably  a dozen or two dozen—that have taken the extra step of acknowledging civil unions and this decision a few days ago is far from that, as the Prime Minister noted. But I think in terms of the international community and the United Nations and the conventions that address issues of discrimination and violence, I think that this decision is right in line with the principles and values that are expressed in those conventions, to which Belize is actually a party. People are free to say what they wish to say or sincerely believe. And there is nothing in the opinion that really prohibits people from speaking their minds. But the ultimate conclusion is a good one. And I think the Chief Justice also takes into account that this is an area of behavior that people differ on quite vociferously. But the important thing is that people not resort to name calling, slander, libel and certainly they should not resort to violence. I think I read that the issue needs to be ventilated between the social partners in Belize and I think that that will probably be the next step. And I think as the Prime Minister also indicated, he said that we need to educate the public as to what the statute prohibited and what this decision actually means.”

  1. Liberty & Freedom says:

The United Nations is another corrupt entity created by the United States. Their power did not emanate from a democratic vote. There power comes from the member States who pay their dues. The act as a world police force, however, they are also guilty of raping women and children
I hardly call that fitting your statement of “principles and values”. You lied when you entered this country stating that you did not have a gay agenda. Your actions and words are definitely in conflict with your initial statements. But then again, you work for a man who lied about his war record.
You represent a God-less administration and have lined the pockets of our judges and Prime Minister.
It would not be a stretch to state that because of your judgeship in the US you advised Chief Justice Benjamin on how to make a favorable decision for Caleb and his LGBT friends. Pack your bias bags
and return to the California, the land of fruits and nuts………
