Ambassador Moreno Advises Churches to Seek Permission to Appeal

Carlos Moreno

Today, a closed meeting among church leaders with an attorney took place to discuss the way forward and a possible appeal of the decision by the Chief Justice that decriminalized same-sex intercourse between consenting adults. Prime Minister Barrow has indicated that the churches have the right to appeal. But can an interested party in fact appeal the decision? That’s what we asked a former Supreme Court Judge, Ambassador Moreno.

Carlos Moreno, U.S. Ambassador to Belize

“I’m not going to opine on Belizean law, but I do know that in the United States, an interested party needs to seek permission or leave of the court, because they are not an actual party. And I have seen instances where on appeal, an interested party has had standing where there have been no adversities; that is the claimant or the defendant are no longer in a position to take a position of advocacy. On the other hand, I have seen instances where an interested party—and this happened in the Hodgkin’s case that went before the U.S. Supreme Court proposition eight out of California—where it was found that an interested party did not have standing. So I’ve seen it work both ways and I think the Attorney General probably gave the best answer that you need to look at the rules and seek permission to file an appeal as an interested party.”

Correction please. Moreno was a California Supreme Court Justice, not US Supreme Court. He strongly leans “left” politically. He is not going to “Opine on Belizean Law… But he did tell us what they do in the USA. Well Moreno, you and your colonial bosses at the White House can shove your opines and laws.
America’s greatness has diminished according to the world view.To become a light shining on a hill, Americans need to unite under the only banner that counts – God’s!! Onward Christian Soldiers!
Restore morality, work ethic, honesty, family unity, solid values, treat other with respect. This whole issue is about the downfall of morality.
