Will B.P.P. Member Be Expelled in Social Media Fight?

Patrick Rogers

The Belize Progressive Party is approaching its first anniversary of formation; but as with any political party there is internal turmoil. In this case, at least one member may face internal discipline up to possible expulsion as a result of alleged misrepresentation of a meeting held with a prominent local personality. The party’s political leader, Patrick Rogers, discussed the issue at length during today’s press conference:

Patrick Rogers, Party Leader, B.P.P.

“Let me put an end to that right now. I had a meeting that I took the Chairman with to meet Mr. Ernesto Vasquez, who does the LOVE FM morning show and owns Mala’s. He was being paid by the Prime Minister’s office to sample those amongst us in the society that are of the No to the ICJ. Now, whenever we go into meetings, we make it a practice to take another executive member so that there is no question about what is discussed in the meeting. Because the meeting was convened on short notice, and I couldn’t get a confirmation from any of the executive members, I had asked a member who is not an executive if he would accompany me, just to ensure that I had somebody with me in the meeting. The fact that the Chairman adjusted his schedule to accompany me, meant I had the best person on my executive to take with me to this sit-down. At no point was the issue of money discussed; the 100 percent of the discussion was about our position, no to the ICJ. I guess the Prime Minister wanted a feedback as to whether we were just playing politics or whether we truly believe in what we were saying. And so it took us two hours to sit down with Mr. Ernesto Vasquez to explain to him and answer the questions that he brought to us, and that’s what – one of our members fabricated a story that I got five hundred thousand dollars from Prime Minister to shut up.”

Rogers added that he has been busy personally rebuilding and converting the property at Vernon and Partridge Street into the party’s secretariat, which should be ready by the first week in September. The party is going through its internal disciplinary process in regard to the member who raised the allegation on social media and Rogers promised a further report on that in a future meeting.

In other party news, the B.P.P. has formed a youth arm, the Belize Progressive Youth Initiative, to be launched shortly, and is participating under the Belize Territorial Volunteers’ name in the upcoming Eco-Sarstoon Challenge.
