2 Women Freed Of Drug Trafficking Charges

Calvin Lauriano

Two women accused of trafficking one hundred and forty-eight pounds of cannabis found inside a vehicle at the La Democracia police checkpoint were released after Magistrate Deborah Rogers found they had no case to answer. Twenty-year-old Eve Beeks of Belize City and twenty-one-year old Dawn Parchue avoided a heavy fine and jail sentence after their attorney, Senior Counsel Ellis Arnold argued to Magistrate Rogers that neither of the women controlled the red Jeep Cherokee in which the drugs was found; they neither drove it nor owned it. Magistrate Rogers upheld the no case submission but not on the grounds that Arnold submitted but rather on the grounds of the definition of premises, which she viewed a much wider definition than that of a dwelling house but which she agreed does not include a boat or a vehicle. Meanwhile, the case continues against the driver, thirty-nine-year old Calvin Lauriano and the other male passenger, Marlon Chaneck, a resident of Santa Elena, Cayo. Neither of the men had legal representation and they each spoke from the dock saying the marijuana belonged to the other man. Chaneck says he saw the suitcases inside the vehicle when he got in and was asked to “take the rap” for them; but Lauriano said Chaneck brought the luggage with him when he got in. Magistrate Rogers has reserved her ruling on the case of Chaneck and Lauriano for September twenty-second, 2016.
