A Well-known Football Player is Slain in Belize City

The city is still reeling from another senseless murder. A well-known footballer was shot and killed early this morning on Dolphin Street. Jason Young left his wife and children at their home to go and buy Johnny cakes for breakfast. He did not get too far; he was ambushed at the junction of Gibnut Street and did not survive the multiple gunshots that hit him on the chest and wrist. An eighteen year old is in detention and believed to be the suspect. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

An early morning murder in the city has stunned the Old Capital. Thirty year old Jason Steven Young was shot and killed around six-forty a.m. on Dolphin Street. It is believed that Young was ambushed by a teenage gunman as he approached the junction with Gibnut Street. Young was shot four times and collapsed on the sidewalk adjacent to a parked bus near the Roger’s Stadium.

“Jason Steven Young, a thirty year old Belizean was walking on Dolphin Street from the direction of Cemetery Road, heading towards Fairweather Street. And before reaching the corner of Gibnut Street, he was approached by a male person who pointed a firearm at him and fired three shots, fatally wounding him. Two to the chest and two to the left wrist.”

 

Young died on the scene. The father of four had just left his home on Ebony Street and was en route to work, but stopped at a nearby shop to buy breakfast. He never made it far when he was killed by a gunman who was wearing a warm cap.

“He left out for work. He say ih gwen and I tell ahn but I noh make breakfast yet. like how ih early just take this money yah and yo buy Johnny cake in front of Atlantic by pound yard. And so he left out, but normally I woudla usually tell him bye, but this day yah, I mi just feel funny to tell my husband bye because I had this vibe that if I say bye, he might just noh come back. So I just watch he gone through the door and that’s the last time, I see he. Until my son come back and say he get a phone call, he come back from work and say, “Ma, Packson dead.”

 

Following the shooting, a police officer set chase after the gunman who escaped on Gibnut Street, leaving behind a nine millimeter pistol. But there is a person in custody, an eighteen year old; who police believe is linked to the murder. Despite that, a motive has not been ascertained.

“The gunman managed to run on to Gibnut Street; he as followed by an on duty police officer who was on his own vehicle and managed to fire shots in his direction, but missed. The assailant escaped into nearby neighbors’ yards. Presently, we have a person of interest in custody. Investigation I still young at this time and we are working very diligently on it and hopefully we might have a very successful investigation which might lead to an arrest.”

“I can confirm that Jason Steven Young was the intended target; the motive of it is still unknown. We understand that Mister Young associated with Big Tom and his associates, but we haven’t confirmed if that is the motive of the incident.”

“Our investigation into the matter is still fluid and it continues. We believe that the person we have in custody is the right person. Despite the fact that he had on a mask, we have other things of significant evidential value that ties him to the scene and the shooting. So the investigation will continue from there.”

 

Young, who is affectionately known as Packson, was an avid footballer.

In respect of the murder of John Williams which occurred last Tuesday, Rural Eastern Division police confirmed late this evening that they have Egbert Baldwin in custody and he is expected to be charged for William’s murder.
