Taiwan Donates Two Hundred Thousand to Hurricane Relief

The Government of Belize has received a donation of one hundred thousand U.S. dollars from Taiwan, in the wake of Hurricane Earl.  Relief efforts are ongoing and contributions from various agencies are helping to restore a sense of normalcy among families that have been most affected by the natural disaster.  Earlier this week, Belize Telemedia Limited donated fifty thousand dollars to the Belize Red Cross and Hand in Hand Ministry, respectively. The IDB and the European Union have also contributed to the relief kitty.  Today’s donation from Taiwanese Ambassador Benjamin Ho will go to the National Emergency Management Organization, NEMO.  Since the hurricane a week ago, roughly twelve hundred families within the Belize District have received assistance through the National Relief Supplies Committee and the Ministry of Human Development.  At a brief handing over ceremony this morning, Ambassador Ho spoke about the resilience of the Belizean people.

“I was impressed even though unfortunately you have Hurricane Earl that has caused damage, but it’s the first time I’m seeing the beauty of the Belizean people because during the hurricane and after the hurricane you can see your people all together, hand in hand; one heart, one mind.  Everybody is working together, the government, the people, the B.D.F., the police, the N.G.O.’s.  It’s a huge effort, a seven member family.  …Your people are not only lovely people, but they’re resilient also, a lovely people of solidarity.  Your community loves each other and helps each other in times of need, so for this I tip my hat for your people.”

Thank you the Taiwan government and people for the assistance to our people. Although I was not affected by this natural disaster , there are many people who really need help. In my community we have cleared the trees and debris that came along with the strong winds and people have helped each other in one way or the other. Thanks to the media that informed the public, the police that did their utmost best, especially in the old city.
