Summer Camp Concludes at Samuel Haynes Institute

Wilfred Elrington

On the south side of Belize City, the Samuel Haynes Institute of Excellence organized a closing ceremony for its summer program today. Primary school children participated in the camp that trained them in music, sports and the academics. The camp is the brainchild of Pickstock area rep, Wilfred Elrington.

“Fundamentally, I have no doubt in my mind that our children are our most precious assets. You notice the logo on our building; our children, our future, our priority – that is exactly what it is. I am also very convinced that in Belize, we don’t spend enough time training our children. As a rule, in the Asian countries, I think they send their kids to school for two hundred and eighty in the year. In Belize, we only send them for one hundred and eighty. And during the course of that one hundred and eighty days, when there is a hurricane there is nobody in school; when there is teacher’s day, there are no children at school; when there is demonstration against gang, there is no children in school. We seem to give holidays for anything and for every reason and so even of that one hundred and eighty days, our children are not in school. And then, the reality is that we are really a third world country, maybe even a fourth world. So that we cannot allow, in my personal view, our children to be out of school so long every year. And so we are hoping that we can in fact do something about it with this small group at least by having these summer programs. So we have the summer programs and we also have the regular programs after schools during the school year. And we want to expand on it as much as possible because I am so passionate about education and training. So many of our kids go to school, but so many of them don’t seem to be able to function when they leave school. We have to address that situation; reverse it. And that is what I would like to do more than anything else.”
