Melissa Ferguson is Still Detained

Melissa Ferguson

Melissa Ferguson remains in the custody of the National Crimes Investigation Branch tonight, as officers await a directive from ACP Joseph Myvett, Head of the NCIB, on whether to charge or release her. The companion of accused murder and kidnapper William Danny Mason handed herself in on Monday and was questioned by investigators for six hours straight during the preparation of a statement. News Five camped out at the Police Station until news time Monday, when it became apparent that Police were not done with Ferguson, even if not necessarily prepared to charge her. This evening, we spoke to attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley, who is awaiting official word on the fate of his client.

“Yes, up until a few moments ago, she was still at the Belmopan Police Station. She has been kept from the time she went in yesterday sometime shortly after eleven a.m.  Under the law, the Police are holding her illegally if they do not charge her and take her in front of a court within forty-eight hours – they will be in serious trouble because foreigners are always aware of their rights. We are hoping that is absolutely unnecessary. The Police have been professional so far. There is really no reason to keep her. This is like a kind of punishing her. But I am very hopeful that the Police in fact will conclude their investigation in relation to whatever matter they would wish to clarify with he, and that she is released. So the situation is that Miss Ferguson is still in the Belmopan Police Station, detained, pending as would be the normal terminology, an investigation into a murder of Pastor Lucas and the kidnapping of Pastor Lucas prior to the murder. Questions were put to her in relation to a matter involving a Mennonite and his family, but the date that was given to her at this late stage she would not have known anything about that. The focus of the investigation and the questions were just to see if in fact she could have been of any help in relation to whatever allegations were made in that regard.”
