UNICEF Issues Care Packages to Affected Families

Ivan Yerovi

UNICEF is assisting with care packages that are being distributed to families in the shelters. There is also a possibility that the organization will provide financial support to the Belize City Council for the ongoing clean-up campaign. UNICEF Rep Ivan Yerovi says preparedness is key in times of natural disasters.

Ivan Yerovi, Representative, UNICEF

“Well from the government side I think all the humanitarian responses are in place.  We have visited three shelters here in Belize City and we have seen that those shelters are well managed by the ministry of human development.  Those families that are there are receiving support, food, shelter of course, they are receiving water.  We are providing – we did, on Saturday, provide family kits to the ministry of human development.  We understand that they are going to be delivered to those shelters.  We are about to donate two hundred and fifty family kits to the shelters and we are also analyzing the possibility of providing some financial support to Belize city, to the Mayor, who has requested some support for cleaning up the streets and that will require some cash, some funds.  So we are, along with UNDP, analyzing the possibility of providing some financial support to Belize City.”

“What else should people keep in mind after this event?”

Ivan Yerovi

“We always get some lessons out of these situations.  i think the country has done a great job of informing population ahead of this event.  I think we should insist on that and be better prepared.  Unfortunately, this is only the beginning of the Hurricane Season.  Hopefully we’re not gonna be impacted for another one but the way we see it in UNICEF is we always have to get some lessons out of this process to try to improve ourselves and I hope the country can do the same and prepare for whatever’s coming next.”
