Firearms Ballistic Examiner Charged for Attempting to Tamper with Evidence

Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley

Following weeks of investigation, Firearms Ballistic examiner Orlando Vera was arraigned on a single charge of abetment for the crime of perverting the course of justice in the case of Michael Modiri.  Allegations against Vera are that between July first and July thirty-first, 2015 in Belmopan, Cayo District, he offered to tamper with evidence in the case against Modiri who faced firearm and ammunition charges.   In a statement during a preliminary investigation, Modiri, one of the alleged targets in the Bradley Paumen case, told Police that Vera met him in Belmopan and offered to assist him in preventing the gun from functioning. Vera was brought before the court today and arraigned before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith.  Appearing for the crown was D.P.P. Cheryl-Lynn Vidal. While the D.P.P. had no objection to bail, she asked the Chief Magistrate to set stringent conditions on Vera so that he or no one on his behalf tries to interfere with Modiri since there are reports that he already visited Modiri at his home. Vera was granted bail in the sum of one thousand dollars with conditions.  But he disclosed that between August twenty-fourth and twenty-sixth, 2016 he is scheduled to travel on official business for the National Forensic Department. The Chief Magistrate informed him that he will have to make an application before the Magistrate in Belmopan requesting the opportunity to travel.  His next court date is set for August twenty-ninth 2016.  The Chief Magistrate has ordered an expeditious trial so the D.P.P. requested that the charge be dealt with summarily. Before the arraignment of Vera concluded, he was presented with disclosure.

Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley, Attorney

“Mister Vera is accused of making an offer to him or discussing with him or with someone, whatever it is. The charge sheet would not say that; it just says that the charge is that sometime between early June and late July last year, there was that discussion in relation to offering to assist by making perhaps the firearm not meeting the standards that it could discharge or something of that nature.”

“But how long now since they have been investigating Mister Vera?”

Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley

“Nobody has been investigating Mister Vera. This matter only arose when the disclosure in relation to the Bradley Paumen abetment matters were being dealt with for the purpose of preliminary inquiry where the statement of Mister Modiri was among the statements in the disclosure and that was how the matter came about.”

You can’t trust anything to do with the Police Dept. The entire bunch of them are totally incapable of doing their jobs honestly.
