Creative Arts Curriculum to be Piloted in Primary Schools

Leroy Green

Green also told News Five that after four years in the making, in the next school year, the creative arts curriculum will be piloted in primary schools.

Leroy Green, Creative Arts Coordinator, Ministry of Education

“In a week’s time, we will be training teachers in regards to the first completed draft of the new curriculum for primary schools. Teachers will be coming from all over the country, but we will be focusing on the beginning classes of each division—that is, infant one, standard one and standard four—and then we will be piloting it and going around to see how well it is being done in the school. It’s been a lot of work, but I must really thank the group who has been working with me because it is not something that I could have done by myself. But I have a group of really dedicated facilitators who have really worked hard to reach this point. We hope to be able to go to their schools and see them actually putting into effect, effective arts lessons—and when I say arts I mean all the genres—and then actually have on the spot working sessions with them. That is the plan we have in mind and we really hope it will occur that way so that we can roll it out to all the schools. By piloting it, we will be able to see what are the strengths and weaknesses and be able to work on it. Actually the entire curriculum, it’s been over a period of four years we’ve been working on this to reach this point because we kept consulting teachers when we went around to the districts to see what they thought about this and that. We also had to keep in mind the fact that the arts can only be taught for one hour per week in the schools. So we had to be realistic with what we put in the curriculum so that it could be both teacher friendly and children friendly and also practical to the Belizean scene.”
