Income Tax Robbers are Arraigned for Belmopan Heist

On Friday, at around five-thirty, the Income Tax Department in Belmopan was robbed in quite sensational fashion. According to the facts of the case three men entered the building, two of them dressed in camouflage clothing. One of them pointed a gun at a policeman on duty and another relieved him of his service revolver. They then tied up the persons inside with duct tape, and one of the men got into the cashier’s draw and took out twenty-nine thousand dollars in cash. They also robbed the persons inside of cash and personal belonging before the men calmly walked out and got into a silver four-runner parked outside and left the scene. Today those three men – Devon Brooks, Richard Hyde and David Cruz, along with the woman Police say was the driver of the getaway vehicle, Ishelle Tablada, were arraigned in Belmopan Magistrate’s Court – the men for robbery and Tablada for Abetment to Murder. The three men could not get bail because the robbery was committed with a firearm, and while Tablada, a first time offender could have been bailed on the lesser charge, she wasn’t. We spoke to her very surprised attorney Leroy Banner after the case.

Leroy Banner, Attorney for Ishelle Tablada

“I was trying to impress on the court that under section sixteen of the Crime Control Act that abetment to commit robbery is a bailable offense and that in this case, my client has three young children and her mother is sick and we think that bail should be given because there is no evidence whatsoever that linked her to the crime.”

Mike Rudon

“Were you surprised that she was denied bail?”

Leroy Banner

“Of course I was surprised because we were in court and to me the court not even considered my submission before I could say that she ruled on my submission. So I am pretty much shocked without even considering what I have to say to the court.”

Mike Rudon

“What was the argument of the prosecution to object to bail?”

Leroy Banner

“The prosecution was saying that they still need to try and recover more money and that robbery is on the rise in Belize, pretty much.”

Mike Rudon

“From being in court, could you give us an idea of the arguments for the other three men? I know you weren’t the attorney, but could you give us an idea of what happened with them?”

Leroy Banner

“Well bail was denied because they were charged with firearm offenses and under the law, the magistrate cannot give them bail for firearm offenses so there was no argument per say because it’s automatic that you go to Supreme Court for bail.”

Police have recovered most of the items stolen in the robbery, and credit the quick resolution to the brazen robbery to the assistance of the community.

She should have thought about all that before she went as an accomplice. I notice that now when anyone gets caught, all of a sudden they, or some member of family is il or they have some emergency. Food for thought; when will you all go after theiving Ernest Staine for that lady’s money? Has he paid as yet?
