Belize City Men Indicted on Separate Sexual Assault Charges

Jose Rivas

There are two reports tonight involving the sexual abuse of minors.  The first is a despicable allegation of sexual abuse against a two year old child. The alleged perpetrator is a grown man from Belize City, a well-known car washer who is posted outside the courts on a daily basis.  Shortly before noon on Wednesday, thirty-one year Jose Rivas of a Prince Street address was arraigned in the court room of Chief Magistrate Anne Marie and pleaded not guilty to the charge of sexual assault. The alleged crime occurred on July eighteenth.  There was no objection to bail by court prosecutor, Corporal Christopher Smith, but because of the age of the victim, Chief Magistrate Smith denied bail to Rivas and remanded him into custody until October twentieth, 2016.

The second allegation involves a young girl who claims she was raped by a resident of Lemoth Street in Belize City.

Rashaad Arnold

The alleged culprit has been identified as Rashaad Arnold, who was arraigned before Magistrate Deborah Rogers shortly before noon today.  Arnold wanted to provide an explanation to the court, but he was told he did not have to explain anything at this time.  Prosecutor in the case, Corporal Kennard Clark, objected to bail due to the nature of the offense and asked the court to take into consideration that the alleged victim is under the age of fourteen and that the penalty carries a prison term of no less than fifteen years. He also asked the court to take into consideration the prevalence of the crime and that the accused may try to interfere with the victim. Bail was denied and Arnold was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until October third 2016. Allegations are that on July twentieth he raped the child. The child was sent to run an errand by the mother and when she took too long to return, the mother went looking for her.  She later found the child at the home of Arnold where she saw him shielding the young girl in the bathroom area of his house. The child told her mother that she had been abused by Arnold.
