A Man is Stabbed to Death in Cayo, Suspect on the Lam

There was a homicide in San Ignacio on Monday night. Just before seven o’clock, police were called out to Floyd Moro Street in the Santiago Layout area to discover the body of a man in a pool of blood on the dirt road. Edilberto Moralez, a construction worker of Benque Viejo is believed to have been killed on the site by a coworker, with whom he had an argument minutes before his killing. The main suspect of the murder is Nuri Polanco who remains on the lam. News Five’s Duane Moody went west and has this report.

The manhunt for Nuri Polanco continues in the west as officers attached to the San Ignacio Police Formation investigate the stabbing murder of a Benque Viejo resident on Floyd Moro Street in the Santiago Layout area of San Ignacio Town. Thirty-two-year-old Edilberto Moralez was mortally wounded after he was stabbed five times to the head, chest, back and abdomen following an altercation between the two. According to police, the construction workers were socializing at Polanco’s residence on Floyd Moro Street when they began arguing over a television.

“About six-fifty p.m., acting upon information of a stabbing incident in the Santiago Layout area of San Ignacio Town, police visited a dirt road in Santiago Layout area where they saw the apparent lifeless body of a male Hispanic person lying face up in a pool of blood. The body was subsequently identified as Edilberto Morales, thirty-two years Belizean construction worker of a Kontiki address in San Ignacio Town. Initial investigation reveals that after socializing and drinking, the deceased and another individual were walking on Floyd Moro Street in Santiago layout area when they had a heated argument over a TV that one of the accused had loan the deceased, which subsequently resulted in a physical confrontation where the deceased received five multiple stab wounds to the upper part of his body.”


The men had been working together for about a year on the construction of a house in the Santiago area. They were friends and according to Moralez’s mother, Ofelia, she hadn’t heard from her eldest son for over a month. By the time she was called out to the hospital, it was to identify the body of Edilberto.

“They tell me that they found somebody that look like my son and they tell me to go and identify if it is my son. I gone to see ahn last night when I see ahn, it is my son. Lotta blood and my son dead. they kill my son. It’s hard for me because he is part of me. He left six kids; that’s the pain I have because I am poor, I have six grandsons and I don’t know what to do. I lost my son. I never know that this wah happen to him. It is so sad because I never thought that would happen to my son. I don’t believe that people would do things like this to kill my son. I don’t know why because he noh like fight with nobody.”

“When was the last time you saw him or spoke with your son?”

“Like one month. And that’s why I feel so, so sad because I noh wah see my son again with life. The Sunday I feel something; I wanted to go see my son, but I never gone because I suffer with lot of pain in my knees and I can’t walk too good because I suffer. And I never gone see my son; that’s why I feel so sad I noh see my son again with life.”


Police have detained two persons and are looking for two others including the main suspect, Nuri Polanco, who is believed to have inflicted the stab wounds. He remains on the lam and is wanted by the police. Officer Commanding San Ignacio Police Formation, Superintendent Richard Rosado says investigation suggests that Polanco is still in the Cayo area.

“Sir the murder weapon, has it been recovered? And I believe that you guys are also looking for someone?”

Yes we have not located the murder weapon but we are looking for a suspect who we believe is from Belize City. From the evidential material that we have gotten so far, all indications are that Nuri Polanco was the person that committed the murder.”

“Have you guys reached out to your counterparts in Belize City to notify them if he pops up in Belize City?”

“Yes we have informed the officer commanding the eastern formation in Belize City; we’ve also informed the southern regional commander since his mother presently resides in the southern part of Belize City”

“What other efforts are you guys doing to locate this person sir?”

“Well presently we know that he is still in the area because this morning we received information that he came out of the bushes in the Santiago Layout area so we know that he is still in the area. And we have constant patrols out in the area looking for him right now.”


A postmortem was done today and Moralez will be laid to rest on Wednesday. Duane Moody for News Five.

    So What is the difference between mason and this guy. You have mason, give him his charge or are you giving him a chance to flee. Or is so highly influential that he will walk out as a free man? What more evidence you want? the head the police found in in masons car is a human head not an animal head. Stop Corruption!!!!
