Mayan Cable Tubing; City Hall Explains New Tourism Venture

Darrell Bradley

There is a proposal for a new project in Belize City which would see the old capital exploring water sports at Sandlighter’s Promenade. It’s an innovative concept which has been presented to all relevant regulatory stakeholders by young investor Raul Pelayo. It’s called Mayan Cable Tubing Limited, and this afternoon there was a soft launch at City Hall to allow the public to get a first look.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“The Council has been considering this proposal for some time, actually several months. I know we had made a briefing about it previously. I know that Mister Pelayo had gone on the media previously and one of the things that we mean to do by this press briefing is to lay out the proposal to the public so that people will be able to understand, appreciate the extent of the project and so that they would be able to give response, feedback, criticism and to advise in relation to the direction.”

“It’s a mixture of water wake boarding and high line obstacle coursing. Wakeboarding is simply two towers, one on land, one in water or we can have two in water. And there is a cable that attaches both of these towers that go in the water and there is a main motor that shifts these lines out and bring it back and there is one line that drops, that suspends off this cable. And an individual with a wakeboard, a vest and a helmet, which is properly trained….you go through training and then you hold on to this cable line and then you get repelled, you ski, surf on top of the water…wakeboard.”

What does wakeboarding have to do with the Maya? Seems like they should have something to say about this latest misuse of their name. And please check out the correct meaning and use of the work “Mayan”.
