Residents Have Final Say on Proposed Promenade Project

Darrell Bradley

The project will make use of a minimal amount of space on the promenade and will not obstruct the waterway. Still, the Mayor is making it clear that if residents of the city don’t give the project a green light, then that will be the end of that.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“Essentially what will be involved here in terms of the public usage is that he is asking to use three of the areas on Sandlighter’s Promenade that jut out into the waterways. So each of these three areas it is proposed will have kiosks on them. One of the kiosks will be a two storey tower so that he’s not using any of the parking; he’s not using any of the walkway along Sandlighter’s Promenade. He’s only using the area that will jut out into the water and in relation to what is proposed to be built, these are the kiosks. So each of the kiosks as you can see are on platforms—half of the kiosks will be in the water, half will be in these areas that jut out in the water. And for City Council purposes, this is what we are concerned about in terms of to what extent is he using an existing public way. This is the two storey kiosk; he anticipates that part of this will be a receiving bay so that he is going to receive customers, members of the public. They are going to be selling tickets, part of it will be an office and part of it will be in relation to an area that people can sit to wait for the tours. These areas are not more than fifteen by fifteen; if you can look at the bays that go out in the water, they are not very big in any event, but we can share the technical drawings which will tell you exactly the dimensions. This is the most, if I could say; intrusive of the structures because it is two areas and then it is a two-storey structure.”

There will be a public meeting at the proposed site of the project near the Mexican Institute on Wednesday night, when the project with technical drawings and all will be presented.
