K.H.M.H. Receives Newly Refurbished Day Room

The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority was today officially handed over a newly refurbished “Day Room” at the Operating Theater of the national referral hospital. The facelift to the waiting area and preparation room of the theater wing was made possible with funds from the hospital auxiliary and its membership. The project which included the renovation of the floors, ceiling and walls within that portion of the hospital was completed at a cost of eleven thousand seven hundred dollars. News Five spoke with Auxiliary President Magda Burgos was on hand today for the launch.

Magda Burgos, President, Hospital Auxiliary

“Every year we ask the hospital administration to guide us in where they would like the help and this year, they suggested this waiting room…it is called a day room. We looked at it and we said we are here to serve the public and so we decided to help out and we have spent about eleven thousand seven hundred dollars in refurbishing this place; we did new floors, ceilings, walls, everything…the waiting area plus the preparation room that is right beside it. And I think that the public will greatly benefit from this donation.”

“So it’s primarily for those who have patients here that have just gotten operations?”

“It’s for day cases – people who come in to the hospital for surgery, but as a day case will wait here, get prepared and then be taken into the operating theatre, yes.”

“You said that this is one of the many projects that the auxiliary has taken us. Talk to us about that.”

Magda Burgos

“Yes, every year we try to help and we are working in partnership, like Mister Tillett said, with the Karl Heusner Authority and they give us the area to work. Last year we did blankets and pillows and refurbishing the chairs for the asthma bay; stuff that we do on a yearly basis is to help the hospital. But on a continuous basis, every day, we work with the social workers here and they provide us with the needs of the people. And so people who need financial assistance to get medical attention and by that I mean cat scans, x-rays, blood tests, different things. Sometimes it is as little as transportation to and from their home, which is like PG. People who come here in the ambulance, when they’re ready to go home, they discharge them; they don’t have money to go back. So we help them to go back home. We also run the hostel which helps families of the patients here to have a place to stay overnight. And I know that sometimes, like I said, these things seem like nothing, but somebody has to organize it, somebody has to manage it and it is a daily thing for me to manage these things.”

The money used to fund these projects is generated from the cafeteria inside the K.H.M.H. lobby.
