Ministry of the Environment Assessing Fines for Company

The stop order was not to close the factory down, but rather to give the company strict notice that it must act immediately to remedy what in some cases were deliberate breaches.

On the Phone: Colin Young, C.E.O., Ministry of the Environment

“There were four or five things if I can recall. One was that there were two illegal canals that were dug without any permission. There were two dams constructed on the Whitewater Lagoon without any permission. In fact those were categorically against the ECP. In the EIA that was done and in the ECP they were told not to touch that lagoon in any way, shape or form and so the stop order was in relation to those things. And then there was a molasses spill that they didn’t report. The stop order was in respect to those things, not to the operation of the fact.”

Mike Rudon

“So the expectation is that the Department of the Environment and Santander would discuss to see how the company could remedy those breaches?”

On the Phone: Colin Young

“Correct. How they can remedy those breaches and we have already expressed to them that the Ministry will be proceeding with fining them as per the regulations for the breaches.”

So Santander will be fined for the breaches, though a quantum has not yet been determined. What is Santander’s position on the stop order? Well today we spoke to Public Relations Officer Beverly Burke who denied that the company had indeed been issued with any such order for non-compliance with the ECP.
