Yearwood Says Effective Policing Is Responsible for Northside Peace

Fitzroy Yearwood

There is always a clear differentiation between the north side of the city and the south side – sort of an assertion that bad things happen in the latter, while the former is a peaceful zone in the old capital. Yearwood says that it’s not necessarily that there’s no trouble in the north side – it’s really a matter of effective policing to keep it under control.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Press Officer, Eastern Division North

“It’s effective policing. We try our best to Police our area efficiently. If you notice on the weekends we have additional patrols on the ground. We know that we have the entertainment on the north side of Belize. We know that we have the nightclubs. We have our patrols set up in such a way that we can quell crime and even try to prevent it from happening.”

“ACP Williams went on the record as well – there’s a comparison he made between northside and southside in terms of resources. He went on the record to say that somehow the northside get more resources or have more resources as compared to the southside, and the southside is where it is needed. Can you talk to us about this alleged imbalance between north and south?”

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“Well when it comes to police resources I’m not the right person for that question. If he made his observation and comments that is his own observation, but on the northside we do not rely solely on resources. The number one resource is our personnel, and we try our best to set up our patrols in such a way that you wouldn’t miss any resource if you don’t have it. We try to work with what we have on the northside, and just to state that we are not a divided department. It’s just because of the categorization of precincts we have to use what we believe we have to get the job done and make it work.”
