Deputy Postmaster General Provides Update on Financial Misappropriations

James Gabourel

The training workshop for regional Postal service personnel continued in Belize City today. We’ve reported comprehensively on it, but tonight there’s another angle. The Belize Postal Service has come under scrutiny in the past year after allegations of mail tampering, and two allegations of stolen money. We took the opportunity to ask Deputy Postmaster General James Gabourel for an update on those unsavory episodes in the Postal Service.

James Gabourel, Deputy Postmaster General

“I can say that of late, we haven’t been getting such complaints from our customers and that could be as a result of our security cameras within all post offices. We have installed surveillance cameras in our post offices throughout the length and breadth of this country. And so those cameras are monitored by supervisors and in the case of Belize City, we have a very senior officer in the person of the postal inspector, who would review those surveillances. And I think that has been a great deterrent.”

“On a related note, I believe in the past year, there were two instances where there were actually thefts, not of items being delivered but of employees who have stolen from the post office. Can you speak to whether those funds have been recovered?”

James Gabourel

“In one of the cases, the person has been tried and has been convicted. The other case is still before the courts and as such, I wouldn’t want to comment on that.”

Reporter

“But the one where the person was tried, the money was recovered?”

James Gabourel

“That wasn’t recovered in terms of the judicial system. They are charged and fined and then they would go to prison to spend time.”
