Exhibition honours Rex Nettleford

Story Picture
Rex Nettleford; his name has long been synonymous with the University of the West Indies–and to honour him UWI has created a travelling exhibition. That presentation is now in Belize…and News 5′s Patrick Jones checked it out.

The exhibition chronicles the inspiring rise of Professor Rex Nettleford from humble beginnings in rural Jamaica to become the vice chancellor of the University of the West Indies. J. Alexander Bennett is the acting resident Tutor of the UWI centre in Belize City.

?The display consists of several posters. I think it?s about eight posters and a banner in which there are summaries of his rise to the position he is in; in other words his life and his career as an academic and as an advocate for the working man since he was head of the institute of trade unions in Jamaica.?

The travelling exhibition will make stops in all Commonwealth Caribbean countries where UWI operates. Bennett says it is a fitting tribute to one of the region?s most prominent scholars.

?He has academic acclaim for having worked on theories having to do with the cultural identity of West Indians. He has written articles and books on that theme and about the Caribbeanization of culture. But aside from that he has actually been acclaimed as a dancer and choreographer.?

The exhibition is part of a year-long tribute by the School of Continuing Studies to Professor Nettleford. It is open to students, teachers and anyone who has passed through the UWI system. Patrick Jones, for News Five.

From Belize the exhibition goes to the Bahamas on Thursday.
