The Need for Continued Intervention in Gang Warfare

Chester Williams

Since the shooting death of Giovanni Gentle in the wee early hours of Saturday, interventionists have not met with elements of Belize City’s feuding groups to stage a mediation.  It is much needed, as the recent spike in gang violence has the Old Capital on edge.  Today, ACP Chester Williams spoke on the urgent need for convening rival gangs and bringing them to the table.

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“That’s why I’ve always said that mediations, despite critics, in fact, works because when we have mediations after any shooting there is always no retaliation because we always try to stem it through the mediations.  But we are regrouping and will begin to do our mediations again very shortly.  We must do our mediation because things on the streets right now are really tense.  We have some intense rivalries taking place right now on south side Belize City between the different factions of the gangs and if we do not meet with them it will get worse. We will never be able to stop all the shootings, no matter what we do.  If we have police at every street corner it still won’t stop all the murders and I have always said and it is the hard truth.  The current generation that is out there giving trouble, they have sentenced themselves to death.  They are like purging themselves and I think that as a society we have done them an injustice.  We have lost them, it’s just a matter of time and one of the only way we could stop this is to see how we can begin to work on the other generation coming up so that they do not fall the way how the current generation has gone and we are trying to do that.  And even though we believe that we have lost this generation as they’re in trouble, we are still working to see how best we can save some of them because we still believe that some of them can be saved and I can tell you that through our interventions and mediations we have seen that some of them have indeed changed because some of them do listen.  But there will always be those ones who will not want to change and will just want to be out there lurking and looking for people to shoot.  And, you know, people talk about jobs, getting them jobs; bredda if you give dehn people deh jobs in the current condition that they are in right now, you know what they will do with the money that they will get from the job?  They’ll buy more guns and ammunition and they’ll have a bigger war.  We cannot put them in no jobs until we could learn to help them overcome their anger and hate.  That is first and foremost.”
