Summer Program for Kids in RED Jurisdiction

Edward Broaster

And the innovation coming out of the Rural Eastern Division doesn’t end with that community meeting. That formation is also looking to keep youths occupied over the summer, with a payday at the end that will keep on paying them for some time to come. It’s a collaboration with the RED and different partners including Restore Belize and the Small Business Development Center, with some assistance from the U.S. Embassy.

“We are inviting young people to come up with a novel idea for a business that is not common to the society where they can present it to the Small Business Development who will be vetting the applications and selecting ten of the best presentations for us to have a job creation fair here at Ladyville. This will be done on the seventeenth of August. The deadline for applications will be the twenty-second of July and the grand prize will be five thousand dollars. We have partnered up with Restore Belize and the Small Business Development Center so that they can administrate the five thousand dollars and give training to those individuals who apply to win this five thousand dollar grant that the Rural Eastern Division is putting up as the first prize.”

“The Small Business Development Center specializes in providing training and support for people to develop these businesses so this is actually creating an opportunity for young people who might not be aware that these services exist, for them to then become part of a competition and through that competition they will get the expertise and support of the Small Business Development center in developing a business plan and in acquiring the skills needed to make a successful business. So it’s more than just a fair that will showcase what they’re doing – it’s actually a training opportunity that then culminates in an award which is presented at the fair.”

Applications are available at the different precincts in the Belize District, at the Restore Belize office and the Small Business Development Center.
