More Accidents in Independence: Police Look at Interventions

Sherlet Ramclam

That’s a total of three fatal accidents in southern Belize since the weekend, two in the Independence area alone. But Inspector Ramclam says that there have been many other traffic incidents in the jurisdiction, despite the many efforts by the police to reduce the numbers.

Insp. Sherlet Ramclam, Acting O.C., Intermediate Southern Formation

“It kinda sad because we are noticing that in this area we are having a lot of traffic accidents. The police are doing as much as we can. We have done a series of stop and check, checkpoints. We have a series of people going to court for no license, no insurance, no helmet. We are trying our best because we find out that in this area it is mostly traffic accidents. And so for this month, we are planning to go into the village and sensitize people about road traffic safety and different things that we can do to have less of these traffic incidents on the road.”

“Are you guys also having an issue with drunk drivers?”

Insp. Sherlet Ramclam
“To an extent yes we are and that’s what we are working with other entities like the liquor licensing board because we notice that some of the establishments they seem to be getting extensions longer than the time and after two three hours, you can’t be more sober than that. So we are trying our best and most of the cases that we take in front of the court, we have more than ninety-five percent conviction on all the traffic charges that we have.”

  1. Hatari says:

Simply enforce the traffic laws! When is the last time you saw a police unit pull over a traffic violator on the highway (I’m not talking about those checkpoints), think hard here . . . NEVER!! They think that check points will do the trick. Think again, even bad drivers stop at the check points. That is not where the accidents happen. Like most of the things that the police do, they don’t have a clue how to do it right.
