Did MIT Personnel Extort Chinese Businesspeople?

Edward Broaster

There’s another incident allegedly involving the MIT, and again, there is practically no official information. What we have heard, unofficially, is that in the past few days the MIT was in the Rural Eastern Division jurisdiction when they reportedly extorted some Chinese individuals heading to Orange Walk. It is alleged that they told the persons that some shrimp in their possession was out of season and they then demanded five hundred dollars. While details are practically non-existent, we confirmed today that A.C.P. Broaster has also heard the report and it is under investigation.

ACP Edward Broaster, Regional Commander, Rural Eastern Division

“Whenever there’s a concern or a report of police wrongdoing, it concerns us. That matter again was referred to the Acting Commissioner of Police who I believe initiated investigation again by the Professional Standard Branch. I don’t know who the citizens or the individuals are. I know that a concern citizen informed me that such incident occurred. I have no concern when any specialized unit operates in our jurisdiction. What I would have concern about is when they operate illegally in our jurisdiction or if there is allegation of them operating illegally in our jurisdiction. So that would be our position.”
